Abstract This research paper describes the design and development of an autonomous railway crossing system. In this paper a prototype model of an autonomous railway crossing system is designed in such a way that it senses the arrival and departure of train using the electromagnetic induction sensors. The railway track gates are automatically controlled by using a lead screw mechanism. An algorithm has been developed that takes input from the electromagnetic induction sensors and control the railway track gates using ARM microcontroller. The analog to digital module of microcontroller converts the analog data received from the electromagnetic induction sensors to the digital one. When the first electromagnetic sensor output is high, the sliding gates mechanism gets activated and the indication regarding the arrival of train is displayed on the LCD for the management of road traffic. The traffic management system displays the closed status until the train departs through the second electromagneti
